Basara Dance
A dance expressing the authentic and modern beauty of Japan exible, smart and tough
Concept of Basara Dance
Basara Dance is based on a new interpretation of the beauty and depth of Japanese dancing. In this modern style of dancing, the appeal of Japanese fans, the movements of Japanese traditional dancing including Japanese Classical Dance and the essence and techniques of other dances originated in Western countries are fused into one.
We believe that dancers can feel the joy of being involved in Japanese culture and rejoice in their good fortune to know Japanese traditional dancing through Basara Dance. And because of this, Basara Dancing will contribute to enriching the beauty of Japan.
Inspiration

Fascinated by
an old photograph…
Exotic mood and Japonism
Prompted by the World Exposition in Paris, Japonism blossomed in the late 19th century.
This photo shows the powerful longing for Japan located in the Far East, which Marco Polo called the “golden country of Jipang.”
When Yasmin Okuno, the founder of Basara Dance was interested in Japanese traditional culture, she was fascinated by its thoroughly novel perspective as if she were a person from overseas, even though she was born and brought up in Japan. She did not see "Japan" with the eyes of native Japanese but through a filter of Western people.
She started thinking about expressing this “Japan” through dancing in 2011. While exploring the meaning and value of her identity as a Japanese, she has danced to convey the exotic atmosphere like the dancing girl in this photo. Basara Dance was created as the outpouring of her passion for Japanese culture and expressing the joy of being Japanese.

She focuses on expressing Japan’s authentic and modern beauty in a flexible, smart and tough way that she originated instead of just following the techniques of Japanese Classical Dance.
Now, she performs Basara Dance at many conventions and parties and in movies and promotion videos not only in Japan but also in the rest of the world. She also plays an active role as a photographic model.
